Dan Berger is professor of comparative ethnic studies at the University of Washington Bothell and director of the Washington Prison History Project. His books include Stayed on Freedom: The Long History of Black Power Through One Family’s Journey, the award-winning Captive Nation: Black Prison Organizing in the Civil Rights Era, and Prison: Incarceration and the Making of America, which is forthcoming from Basic Books.
