On July 12, 2021, the Washington State Department of Corrections issued an updated prison closure plan that announced a “phased approach” to the closures first announced in May and acknowledged the complexities of proceeding as planned. The state said that it was “approaching this challenge with a specific objective of limiting impacts” and that “to the extent possible” its new approach “would include incarcerated individuals and their family and support systems.”
