Kaia Stern

Kaia Stern is the cofounder and director of the Prison Studies Project, the first practitioner in residence at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute, and a Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her work focuses on transformative justice and education in jails and prisons.

Recognized as a national resource, her contribution to the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, Vera Institute of Justice, Kings County District Attorney’s Office, The Riverside Church, Open Society Institute, Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice at Harvard Law School, and the U.S. Department of Justice has facilitated work with numerous schools and prisons in various states for the last twenty-five years. In 2016, Stern was invited to the White House to contribute to a roundtable discussion on criminal justice reform. She is the author of Voices from American Prisons: Faith, Education, and Healing.
