Makeda Best is the Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography and Interim Head of the division of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Harvard Art Museums. Her scholarly interests focus on 19th-and 20th-century American photography, with a special interest in photojournalism, documentary, war photography, and text and image works. Her recent exhibitions include Crossing Lines, Constructing Home: Displacement and Belonging in Contemporary Art in 2019 and 2020, Winslow Homer: Eyewitness in 2019, and Time is Now: Photography and Social Change in James Baldwin’s America in 2018. Makeda also curated Please Stay Home: Darrel Ellis in Dialogue with Leslie Hewitt and Wardell Milan which opened last month and is on view at the Carpenter Center for Visual Art next door.
